Step by Step Images and Instructions
1.
Start by taking a black liner or a thin black pen, and drawing a wavy line at the bottom of your page. Add a horseshoe shape just above this.
2.
Now, add a second "horseshoe" shape just beside the first, but this time do not close the lines all the way. Instead, leave a small gap on the left, and a small gap on the right.
3.
Add a "teardrop" shape above the two you have already drawn – once again, leave small gaps in the lines of this one.
4.
Repeat this again, adding a second "teardrop" emerging from the bottom shape, angling off to the right.
5.
Now, turn to the left-hand line of the "teardrop" you have just drawn, and draw an "arrow" shape, with the point of the "arrow" heading towards your design, and the open end heading towards the left-hand side of the page.
6.
Take a gray pencil, and extend the end of the "arrow" out to create another teardrop shape heading off to the left, and repeat this on the right-hand side. Then, add a series of small circles all around the outside of the two "teardrop" shapes on top.
7.
Add another "teardrop" to the group on the left, and add the small circles as before. Then, add an oval shape to the left of the right-hand group, and draw a series of three more teardrop shapes emerging from this, heading up towards the top of the page.
8.
Now, add a few more small circles around the outside of the top shapes…
9.
And go over everything you have drawn so far with a black liner.
10.
Take an eraser, and use this to erase the pencil lines.
11.
Now return to the black liner, and draw a series of short, sharp lines all over the main shape -these are the spines of your cactus!
12.
Use a red pen to fill in all of the small circles on the outside of the shapes…
13.
And switch to a green pencil to fill in the bottom two sections completely, along with the two top left hand "teardrops", and the section at the very top. Leave the fourth section up uncolored for the moment, and divide the other sections into half, filling one half with the green.
14.
Finally, switch to a light green pencil and fill in the remainder of the shape.
Now that you have learned how to bring a prickly pear cactus to life, why not do a little research and learn more about these fascinating plants? There is plenty to discover!
